CHEMISTS’ STORE ROOM DAMAGED BY FIRE
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 21. Excitement was caused in Willis street on Saturday afternoon by an outbreak of fire in a building at the rear of Boots the Chemists (N.Z.) Ltd. and used as a general store for supplying Boots’ branches in various parts of New Zealand. With the aid of oxygen suits firemen penetrated the dense smoke and fumes to the seat of the fire on the third floor. It took an hour to settle the fire and another hour passed before the premises were reasonably clear of fumes. The building and contents suffered from smoke and heat. An E.P.S. unit, which was carrying out exercises in the vicinity, helped the brigade.
