GORE NEWS

NATIONAL FITNESS RALLY TO BE HELD AT GORE . A national fitness rally, along similar lines to the rally held at Invercargill last year, is to be held at the Gore show ground on November 22. A decision to hold the rally was made at a meeting held in the rooms of the Gore Women’s War Service Auxiliary. A strong committee was formed and it .is hoped that the rally will meet with tire whole-hearted support of the district. The proceeds are to be given to the Gore and districts committees of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. The Mayor of Gore (Mr W. D. Shelton) was chairman at the meeting and there was a good attendance. Mr Shelton extended a welcome to Mr L. W. Woods and Mrs M. Wilson, physical welfare officers for Southland. Mr Woods outlined the work of educating the people in national fitness and said that a fitness rally was part of the general campaign. It was essential that the programme for a rally be varied and continuous for the rally to be a success. Business firms should be encouraged to enter teams and this would create interest in it. School children could also be catered for.

In reply to Mr Shelton, Mr Woods said that the area for a rally at Gore would be all districts that made Gore their centre.

It was agreed by those present that a Gore rally would require the support of the country districts. Varied suggestions were put forward, and the proposal to hold a rally was discussed at length, a decision being made to form a committee with the idea of conducting a rally. The date fixed was November 22.

The following officers were elected: President, Mr W. D. Shelton; manager, Mr J. Ritchie; organizer, Mr F. J. McKenzie; honorary secretary, Mr D. G. Williamson; honorary treasurer, Mr L. G. Thomson; display controller, Mrs A. S. Atkins; sports controller, Mr A. H. Davidson; publicity controller, Mr C. M. Wilson; other members of committee, Mesdames C. G. Burgess, E. Coventry, Misses M. Whelan, F. McHutcheson, Messrs L. E. West, L. O. Wallis and W. L. McGoldrick.

The free use of the show ground for the rally has been granted by the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association. OPENING OF TENNIS SEASON

The tennis season was opened at Gore over the week-end when two clubs held their official ceremonies. The weather was fairly favourable for both openings and good numbers of players took part in the tournaments held.

The St. Andrew’s Club held its official opening on Saturday afternoon, when about 38 players took part in the mixed doubles handicap tournament. The standard of play was reasonably good for the beginning of the season and competition was fairly keen. Miss H. Smith won the women’s section and B. Welsh won the men’s section. The courts were officially declared open for play by the Rev. F. B. Barton, who wished, the club a successful season. Yesterday afternoon the St. Patrick’s Club held its official opening in fine weather. There was a good attendance of club members and visitors and a Yankee tournament was conducted during the afternoon. Miss J. Mallon was successful in the women’s section and F. Mcßride won the men’s section. The Rev. Father A. Welsh officially opened the courts for the season and expressed pleasure at the good attendance. He wished the club a successful season. PLASTER DISPLACED A piece of plaster was displaced front the parapet above the premises in Main street occupied by the United Trading Co., Ltd., by the high wind experienced in the town during Friday night. It crashed through the skylight in the veranda over the footpath, scattering glass in all directions. SOCIAL IN HONOUR OF AIRMAN There was a large attendance of district residents at the Waimumu hall when a social evening was given in honour of Pilot Officer R. Peart. The guest was piped on to the stage by Piper Hedley. Speakers during the evening were Messrs D. McGill (chairman), F. Smith, who made a presentation of a roll of notes, J. Williams (R.S.A.), J. Johnston and R. Hedley, all of whom paid tribute to Pilot Officer Peart’s good qualities. Music for a dance was supplied by Mrs Johnston (piano) and Mr D. Kelly (violin), extras being played by Mrs W. Copland, Pilot Officer Peart and Mr G. McLeod. Items were given during the evening by Messrs E. Goodwin, Miller and E. Wright.
