CARNIVAL FOR BOYS’ BAND

EXCELLENT SUM OF £llO RAISED The excellent sum of about £llO was realized at the carnival conducted by the Mothers’ Club of the Boys’ Band of the Ist Battalion, which was held on Friday and Saturday. The proceeds will be used to meet the band’s yearly recurring expenses, while it will also be possible to set aside a percentage for the instrument replacement fund. A large number of persons visited the carnival on both days and on Friday and Saturday night, in particular, the attendances were excellent. Practically all the goods for the stalls were donated by business firms and supporters and, with the help of an enthusiastic women’s committee, under Mrs A. Cook, all the produce and other goods sold freely. The mystery parcels stall was perhaps the most popular of the carnival and brisk business was conducted during both days. In addition to the stalls, numerous games and competitions were provided for the amusement of the public. The following were the stall holders: Fancy and art, Mrs A. Cook; mystery parcels, Mrs D. E. M. Stewart; sweets, Mrs J. Bernston; produce, Mrs S. Wills and Mrs J. Young; tea rooms, Mesdames A. McClure, Bradley, Heyrick and Clarke. The games were in the charge of Mr L. Monk and members of the senior band.

The eight prizes in the art union were won as follows: Roll of bacon, No. 3379, John Wilson, c/o Carters, Ltd; teddy bear, No. 3199, Mrs E. Horman, 87 Fox street; Sunday dinner, No. 3526, “Lucky Day,” Layard street; dressing jacket, No. 4942, Mr McCallum, Robertson street; canary and cage, No. 4426, Beverly Smith, 77 Selwyn street; satin cushion, No. 2328, Dorothy Heyrick, 149 Dee street; pair of budgerigars, No. 4942, Mr McCallum, Robertson street. Competitions conducted on Friday night resulted: 51b box of chocolates, No. 73, Mrs Flynn, Grand Hotel; iced cake, No. 158, Norman Heyrick, Clyde street; supper cloth, No. 35, Mrs I. McClure, 18 Mitchell street; Sunday dinner, No. 20, H. Swanson, Elies road; satin cushion, No. 20, Bert Bradley, Bowmont street.

Saturday night’s competitions resulted: Lavender water, No. 65, Peter Jackson, care Band; baby outfit (pink), No. 31, Mrs D. Sellars, 93 Leet street; nut bowl, No. 10, M. C. Wilson; rolls of wallpaper, No. 20, M. C. Wilson; Sunday dinner, No. 14, Mrs Scott, 133 Clyde street; women’s pyjamas, No. 44, Mrs A. L. Fox; baby’s outfit (white), No. 19, J. Crosbie, 188 Ythan street.
