CYCLING

DRUMMOND RACE WON BY C. WADDICK Strong winds were encountered on Saturday by members of the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club in a road race to Drummond. The course was from the motor camp in Elies road, out the Riverton highway, and north through Waianiwa and Otahuti, a distance of 28 miles. The race resulted in a win for C. Waddick, from R. Hall and A. Wilson. A field of 16 riders faced the starter. They were: L. Young (9|min), G. Aslett, A. Pedlar R. Hall, A. Wilson (7Jmin), D. Young, D. McKenzie (6min), J. O’Neill, J. McKenzie, C. Waddick, L. Hubber (smin), A. Waddick, C. Campbell, R. McDougall, L. Johnson (2min), H. Hubber (lmin). Promptly at 2 o’clock the first man, L. Young, was sent away. At Jensen’s corner, Aslett and Pedlar, who were 35sec ahead of Hall and Wilson, had overtaken L. Young. Forty-five seconds later came D. McKenzie and D. Young. At this stage H. Hubber was five minutes behind the leaders. At Waianiwa, after 12 miles had been covered, Aslett, Pedlar and L. Young were leading. Hall and Wilson were only five seconds away and they were followed half a minute later by D. McKenzie, J. McKenzie and the remainder of the five and six-minute men. Two minutes later came the two-minute men. Soon after J. McKenzie, A. Pedlar and L. Young were dropped. With 18 miles covered, the five, six and seven and a-half minute men were together, while McDougall, Campbell and Johnson were only one and aquarter minutes away. Near Otahuti, D. McKenzie, J. O’Neill and L. Hubber had a fall. This was probably due to the strong wind which was blowing, and some of the new riders found it difficult to lap correctly into the wind.

The final placings were:—C. Waddick 1, R. Hall 2, A. Wilson 3. Fastest time was gained by C. Campbell, who covered the distance in Inr 18min 36sec. After the race the riders and officials were entertained to afternoon tea by Mrs W. Rookes. Mr Rookes presented a cup to the winner, and trophies to the other placed men. Next week several prominent Southland riders will visit Oamaru to ride in a 38-mile race staged by that club. They are A. Wilson, F. Aim, R. Duncan, J. Johnston and C. Campbell.
