GORE NEWS

DIAMOND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Sixty years of married life were celebrated yesterday by Mr and Mrs A. D. Crawford, of Denton street, Gore. Mr and Mrs Crawford were married at Green Island on September 9, 1881, by the Rev. William Ronaldson. The anniversary was celebrated with a quiet gathering of members of the family. Mr Crawford’s life has been one of adventure and activity in many parts of Otago and Southland. His father, the late Mr Peter Crawford, a veteran of the Crimean .War, came out to New Zealand in the Philip Laing and soon after his arrival took up land at Green Island. Mr Crawford was bom at Green Island in 1859 and on the completion of his education at the Green Island school he started work on his father’s farm. As a youth he became interested in ploughing and demonstrated his ability when he won the Otago junior ploughing derby at the Taieri contests. He later went to the Oamaru district. About 1879 Mr Crawford joined the gold rush to the Long Valley field, which lay between Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea. However, the field was not a very good one and Mr Crawford joined an expedition over the Haast Pass to Jackson’s Bay. After working on the Morven station and in the South Canterbury district Mr Crawford returned to Green Island in 1881 and married Miss Annie Murtagh. Although he is now 83 years of age, Mr Crawford enjoys splendid health. Mrs Crawford, who was born at Auckland, was prominently associated with Red Cross activities in the Owaka district during the Great War. She was one of the Red Cross nurses selected to meet the Prince of Wales on his visit to New Zealand after the war. MAGISTRATE’S COURT (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) Judgment was given by default in the following civil claims: —R. W. Blair (Gore) v. John McLean (Dipton), for £5/1/6, costs £l/12/6; V. Horrell (Gore) v. P. Clarke, jun. (Clinton), for £29/0/6, costs £4/11/6. CLOSING OF ROLL When the main roll closed at the Gore courthouse on Monday a count revealed that there were 1215 new electors. However, since the last election 1991 persons have been transferred from the district. The deficit, however, will probably be more than made up by the supplementary roll, which will be prepared in the event of an election being held. The number of persons on the main and supplementary rolls at the time of the 1938 election was 10,596.
