DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY
NATIONAL CONFERENCE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 9. An all-day conference of the Democratic Labour Party held in Wellington was attended by a large number of delegates from both islands. Full consideration was given to the election policy of the party and arrangements were made for an early general election. The Hon. W. E. Barnard was elected unopposed as national president and the present secretary and treasurer were also re-elected unopposed. The conference approved of the effort which is being made to establish better relations with Russia and recommended the appointment of New Zealand representatives at Washington, Chungking, Vladivostok and, when practicable, Tokyo, in the interests of peace and friendship in the Pacific. The principle of a fortnight’s paid holiday yearly for all workers was affirmed. The establishment of a motherhood endowment so that rents might be paid for large families without the present distress was reaffirmed. The conference also approved of the clinic system of public health in place of the panel system. The pay of the armed forces was fully discussed, a motion supporting better pay for all lower paid ranks being carried. A message of congratulations to the men of the New Zealand Division is to be sent to Major-General B. C. Freyberg.
