ANTI-AIRCRAFT SHIP DESTROYED
(8.0.W.) RUGBY, September 8. How a German anti-aircraft ship was destroyed off Ostend today by a Spitfire armed with cannon and machine-guns was told by the Air Ministry News Service. The Spitfire was on reconnaissance. when the pilot saw three anti-aircraft ships near Ostend. He dived on them and while still firing his first burst he saw one of the ships explode and the superstructure disintegrate, throwing pieces all round in the air. His comment on his return was. “It is probable I hit the magazine. I broke off the engagement while I was still 200 yards away from the wreckage.”
Anti-aircraft ships are usually the size of large trawlers. They carry powerful anti-aircraft batteries in the bow and stern.
