U.S. VESSEL SUNK

ATTACK IN RED SEA UNIDENTIFIED PLANE (Rec. 12.5 a.m.) WASHINGTON, September 8. The State Department announced that the American freighter Steel Seafarer had been sunk in the Red Sea by an aerial bomb on Sunday from an unidentified plane. All hands are safe. No further details are given. 9 Large quantities of war _ materials have been shipped to the British armies through the Red Sea recently in American freighters, President Roosevelt having allowed them to use these waters since the British drove the Italians from their African .colonies bordering the Red Sea. It is predicted that when Mr Roosevelt makes his postponed broadcast on Thursday he will warn Germany and Italy that America insists on the freedom of the seas. He is expected to ask Congress or at least prepare the people for an amendment of the Neutrality Act and a stiffer maritime policy.
