POLICE GUARD PLACED ON SHIP
(PA..) AUCKLAND, September 8. A police guard was placed over the Panamanian Greek-owned ship at present in port shortly before 9 o’clock tonight as a result of the refusal by her crew to work her when she was about to sail. The crew originally went on strike last week over the question of their wages. The local agents said tonight that an agreement over the wages question was finally reached today between the legal representatives of the men and the master and duly signed on behalf of both parties. When the ship was about to sail, however, the men appeared on deck with their bags and refused duty, demanding that their wages be paid to them in American dollars cash. The Customs authorities prevented the crew from coming ashore and shortly afterwards a police guard was placed over the ship. Further action is expected.
