MAINTENANCE OF THE MINISTRY
PRESBYTERIAN APPEAL An address on the maintenance of the ministry was given by the Rev. T. W. Armour, minister of Knox Presbyterian Church, Christchurch, to laymen of the city in Stobo Hall last evening. Sir Robert Anderson was in the chair. The meeting was the first of a series to be conducted by Mr Armour in South- i land in an. educational campaign with ' the object of improving the standard I minimum stipends of ministers and j home missionaries of the Presbyterian | Church. Mr Armour, who is chairman ; lof the Maintenance of the Ministry j Committee of the General Assembly of | the Presbyterian Church of New Zeailand, is conducting the present campaign at the request of a laymen's executive which has its centre in Christchurch. Mr Armour emphasized the advantages of thorough training and sound education which had always been a feature of ministers of the church from the earliest times and the need today for the church to maintain this high standard. Mr J. B. McKinney, of Auckland, who is associated with the executive, spoke of the encouraging response to the campaign throughout New Zealand. After a discussion Mr W. A. Ott proposed a vote of thanks to both the speakers. He said that the facts of the report presented by the committee to the General Assembly had corne as a shock to him and he felt that the laymen generally would only need to be informed of the facts in order to ensure their support in improving the position.
