PROVINCE TO BE ZONED
PATRIOTIC ACTIVITIES A suggestion that all patriotic committees in Southland be represented on the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council was considered by the Invercargill Metropolitan. Patriotic Committee at a meeting last evening. The South Hillend Patriotic Committee wrote stating that it had been decided to. get in touch with various patriotic committees throughout the province with the object of each committee appointing a delegate to the Southland Council. “I have no doubt that the committee is quite genuine in its idea of representation, but I don’t think it understands the true organization of the council,” said the chairman (Mr W. Grieve). The Southland Council was set up by regulation and took over the functions of the old Centennial Council. Power was given to add men and women necessary to give representation and this power had been used on several occasions. There were about 83 committees in the province and it would be impossible to have 83 delegates to the council. Mr Grieve said that the province was at present being zoned and it was proposed that each zone should have representation on the council. The zoning was begun originally for rehabilitation purposes, but would prove very useful for the collecting of money. It was proposed to hold a conference of the 83 committees in August and this would provide a good opportunity for discussion of the organization. “The main task of the Provincial Council is the granting of relief to returned men and the province is being subdivided into zones for the decentralizing of expenditure,” added Mr Grieve.
