BASKETBALL

Collegiate Beats Rata Collegiate and Rata, two unbeaten first-grade teams, provided a splenaxa exhibition of basketball when they met in the inter-club competitions at Duke street on Saturday. Collegiate was the better team on the day and its win was well deserved. This is the first tmxe that Rata has been beaten in inter-club competition games for about three seasons. The conditions were ideal. FIRST GRADE COLLEGIATE 20 v. RATA 15 Rata lost no time in getting the ball away to the attacks and good goals by L. Mehaffey and A. Macdonald gave the team a lead early in the match. Collegiate countered with some bright rallies and N. Mathias was successful. At this stage the Rata centres and attacks seemed to possess a better understanding than did the opposing thirds, while the Rata defences made the task of the Collegiate attacks a difficult one. The match was being played at a fast pace and there was no lack of bright ana enterprising play. Towards the end of the first half Rata gained a three-goal lead. However, Collegiate rallied well and with good team work and some smart passing movements was able to draw level. The half-time scores were:—Collegiate 11, Rata 11. All the players were on theix- toes at the start of the second half, but neither side was able to gain an advantage foxthe first few minfltes. Both sets of attacks had three attempts at goal before Collegiate went into the lead. Collegiate was now having the better of the play and, with the three attacks, G. Maley, W. Sadlier and N. Mathias, sharing the scoring, ran up a five-goal lead. E. Neame, playing hex' last game for Collegiate, was giving a fine exhibition in the centre third and was the pivot of many a determined rally. The Rata attacks were not seeing quite so much of the ball, but even allowing for this they missed some good opportunities. L. Mehaffey, who shot consistently in the first half, was off hex- game. Rata might have been more successful had M. Adam been given a chance at shooting. Collegiate maintained its lead throughout the second half, although Rata continued to work hard until the final whistle. The services of B. Ingram were missed in Rata’s defence third. WALLACETOWN 18 v. TECHNICAL 12 Technical was responsible fox- a much improved game and there was not much between the two teams. Wallacetown’s superiority lay in the attack third. The Technical defences contributed to this superiority by not coming out to the ball. M. Nelson played bright basketball in the Wallacetown attack third. MAKAREWA 15 v. STUARTS 15 Stuarts played well to draw with Makarewa. The Stuarts attacks showed greater- accuracy at goal in the first half and gained a three-goal lead. Makarewa combined bettex- after- the in-tex-val. M. Thomas and J. Swale played well fox- Stuarts and D. Mortimer was responsible fox- a good game in Makarewa’s defence third in the second half. RATA B 17 v. McKENZIE’S 10 McKenzie’s was responsible fox- an improved exhibition, but Rata’s shooting was more accurate. SECOND GRADE Spar- Bush 24 beat Woolworths 8.
