HIGHLAND DANCING COMPETITIONS The first annual gathering of the Southland Highland Dancing Competitions Society which was held on Saturday in the Victoria Concert Chamber, proved an unqualified success. The entries in all events were good and the standard displayed left little to be desired. The judges, Mr D. McKechnie, of Dunedin, and Miss Dorothy Forrester, of Invercargill, were well satisfied. Both considered that the competitors, particularly in the older classes, reached a high standard. There were 170 entries from 68 competitors, 30 of whom were from Otago 27 from Invercargill and 11 from other parts of Southland. In the evening the Mayor (Mr J. R. Martin) delivered a short address, congratulating the society and wishing it success. He welcomed visitors from the north and expressed pleasure that they had enjoyed some success. Pipe music was supplied by Messrs R. F. Donaldson, G. Elder and J. Miller. Results were as follows:
