CANNING MEAT FOR EXPORT

MACHINERY ORDERED FROM AMERICA (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 19. Meat canning for export is likely to be a substantial factor in the operations for the coming season. The necessity for the development of the canning industry has been stressed and the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. J. G. Barclay) was asked today what progress had been made. Mr Barclay said the machinery for canning primary products was on order from, the United States at a cost of between £40,000 and £50,000 and buildings for this industry were being constructed in association with the export freezing works. They would cost in the region of £200,000. The Government was responsible for this expenditure, added the Minister, and these facilities would be available in time for the coming exnort season.
