CYCLING FAST TIMES IN 30-MILE CIRCUIT RACE Fine weather again favoured members of the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club who competed in the 30mile circuit race on Saturday. The riders who faced the starter were:— Milne (Bmin), O’Neill, Millar, Heath, L. Young (7min), Hall, Aim (6imin), Duncan, Black, D. Young, Hubber (4min), Campbell, Murdoch, E. Waddick (2Jmin), Ward, H. Jones (2min), A. Waddick, Johnston (Imin), McDougall (30sec). Before reaching Kennington on the first round Ward and Jones had caught the 2}min bunch and except that McDougall was losing time, the positions remained the same until the start of the second round, where A, Waddick pulled out. Soon after the start of this circuit Aim, who had dropped his co-marker, caught the 7min bunch and these were 40sec ahead of the 4min men, with the 2min and 2Jmin bunch following up close. On the third round Ward and Campbell left their team mates and the 4min men picked up the front bunch. Millar was dropped at this stage and Heath had the misfortune to unship his chain.

O’Neill, who was riding his second race, came away in a great finish to beat Black by three lengths, who was closely followed by Duncan, Aim and L. Young. Half a minute later came Ward and Campbell in one of the fastest sprints seen this season. The final placings were:—J. O’Neill 1, J. Black 2, R. Duncan 3, F. Aim 4.

Fastest time of lhr 17min 51 l-ssec was recorded by D. Ward, Campbell being second with lhr 18 min 21sec. Considering the fast times which have been registered lately it seems possible that the record for the 25-mile Southland time trial, which will be held next Saturday, will be broken. Coming events are as follows.—July 26, Southland time trial (25 miles); August 2, teams’ pursuit race (28 miles); August 9, Roslyn-Myross Bush circuit (28 miles).
