TUATAPERE
BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
To mark the opening of the basketball season the Waiau Basketball Association held ' a tournament on the Tuatapere courts on Saturday afternoon. Seven teams entered and each played at least two games. The most successful team was Pukemaori, which had three wins.
The results of the games were:— Papatotara 9, Western Star 0; Orepuki 6, Tuatapere B 4; Pukemaori 5, Clifden 2; Papatotara 3, Tuatapere A 2; Western Star 7, Tuatapere B 5; Pukemaori 7, Orepuki 3; Tuatapere A 13, Clifden 3; Pukemaori 6, Papatotara 2. After the matches a meeting of the association was held, Mr J. A. Forde presiding over the following delegates: Miss N. Scott and Mr Begley (Clifden)', Mrs R. Erskine and Miss L. Uttley (Papatotara), Misses B. McLeod and V. Henderson (Tuatapere), Miss A. Cavanagh (Pukemaori), Misses D.' Brown and D. Young (Orepuki), Misses D. Chamberlain and M. McKerrow (Western Star) and Mr I. E. Terry (acting secretary). Miss B. McLeod was appointed secretary and Mr I. E. Terry was elected to the list of vice-presidents. The following teams were entered: A grade, Tuatapere, Papatotara, Clifden, Pukemaori; B grade, Tuatapere, Western Star, Orepuki, Clifden, Pukemaori.
Because of the difficulty clubs were experiencing in entering two teams, it was decided to allow B grade teams to play seven-a-side whenever nine players are not available. The B grade teams will play two rounds and the association will decide at the end of the first round whether to play two or three rounds in the A grade. This will depend upon the probability of representative games.
The - following selectors were appointed: Mesdames S. McAlpine (Clifden), R. Erskine (Papatotara) and the president.

Pukemaori; Clifden a bye. - RED CROSS SOCIETY The Tuatapere sub-branch of the Southland Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society held a very successful shop day last week. Produce was brought in from all the outlying districts and approximately £l5 was raised. Tickets were also sold for the benefit picture, “Nurse Edith Cavell,” which is to be screened by Mr Davies on Monday, May 12, the gross proceeds to go to Red Cross funds|. Over £8 worth was disposed of during the day. The following were winners of competitions: Mrs J. Mclntyre, jun. (21b box of chocolates); Mrs Carter (lib of chocolates); Miss E. King (251 b of flour).
