JAPAN FACED BY DIFFICULTIES
German-Like Control Of State Favoured
TOKYO, April 27. “The Soviet-Japanese Pact has not removed the present difficulties facing the nation,” declared the Japanese Foreign Minister (Mr Yosuke Matsuoka). “If possible, I would like to institute a German-like control of our national life from tomorrow. Unfortunately, such control is still only in the paper stage. Germany, of course, also required paper plans at first. But Japan today has no time for that.” The Japanese naval spokesman said the Italian seizure of the Yugoslav steamer Tomislav to prevent the possibility of her falling into the hands of the British was not in conformity with the Japanese intention to prevent the spread of war to the Orient, for which reason the Japanese had made representation to the Italian naval authorities and expected an early reply.
