AMERICAN FREIGHTER STOPPED
SEARCH FOR MEXICAN POLITICIAN SAN FRANCISCO, August 19. The American freighter Herman Frasch sent a radio message to all United States naval and commercial stations as follows: “I have been stopped and boarded at 3.20 p.m. by a Mexican gunboat 70 miles north-west of Acapulco. I am not allowed to proceed and I am now being boarded by armed forces.” It was later confirmed in Mexico City that a Mexican gunboat halted the Herman Frasch under special orders to apprehend the presidential candidate, General Almazan, who was last reported at Havana. The informant said that the Herman Frasch was halted within Mexican territorial waters and also searched for arms. It is understood that she was detained for an hour and allowed to proceed. It was feared that General Almazan, who was apparently defeated in the recent election, might slip’into the country and start a revolt. American naval headquarters at San Diego understood that the United States destroyer Stack has been ordered to Acapulco to investigate the stopping of the Herman Frasch.
