“NIGHT OF RHYTHM”
SUCCESSFUL RECITAL IN TOWN HALL
A very successful entertainment was held in the Bluff Town Hall recently when the Bluff School of American Tap Dancing, under the supervision of Mr Ivan Denton, presented its annual recital, “Night of Rhythm.” Among some of the featured numbers was Mr Roy Hill, late of the Marcus Show, in piano accordion and vocal solos assisted by Mrs Hill on the saxophone. Other star items were delightfully presented by Miss Jean Miller’s dancing pupils, Invercargill, and Mr Norman Bradshaw’s Haere Tonu party, Mrs J. Bragg being leader for the poi dances. Miss Joan Dimond and Mr Ivan Denton demonstrated the famous Astaire-Rogers dance, the “Carioca,” the comedian of the show being Mr R. Cameron, of Invercargill. The costumes and scenery were also a feature of the recital. Mr Brian Harland was responsible for the lighting effects.
The pupils representation of “Deep Purple” captivated the audience. The programme was as follows:— “Your In Education” and “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby," songs and tap, pupils; Bluff Haere Tonu Party, poi dance; Miss Jean Miller’s pupils, gipsy dance; Miss Joan Dimond, tap dance; Master H. Craig, banjo solos; “Highland Swing,” tap pupils; Mi Mark West, song; Miss Miller’s pupils, fancy dancing; Bluff Haere Tonu Party, action song; Mr Roy Hill, western songs; “Goodnight, Little Skipper,” tap, pupils; demonstration of “Trek Dance” and “Park Parade,” senior pupils; Mr and Mrs I. Belsham, vocal duets; Miss Dimond and Mr Denton, “The Carioca”; Mr R. Cameron, comedian; Bluff Haere Tonu Party, canoe poi; Miss Tui Spencer, tap dance; Miss Jean Miller’s pupils, fancy dancing; Mr and Mrs Hill, instrumental; Master Billy Harland, piano solo; Mr J. Walker and Mr R. Hill, piano accordion duet; Bluff Haere Tonu Party, song; “Deep
Purple,” song and tap, pupils; finale, entire company. The accompanists were Mr P. Bradshaw and Mr I. Denton.
