CLASSIC EVENTS A GREAT SUCCESS

Winton Club Reinstates Races For Juveniles SELECT FIELD TO PARADE TOMORROW Although races for three-year-old pacers were held in. Southland several years ago by the Gore Trotting Club, it was found necessary to abandon these classic events, because of the lack of support which was received. The suggestion of the Winton Club to reinstate the classics was made at an opportune time as extensive breeding activities were being carried out in the province and classic events had met with great success on the programmes of northern clubs. Events for two and three-year-old pacers had proved very popular in Canterbury and it was not surprising that the Winton Juvenile Stakes, which was instituted last season, was immediately successful. The Wyndham Trotting Club quickly followed the Winton Club in the field with a juvenile classic, and this event, which is run in March, has been equally successful. There is no doubt that these events for three-year-old pacers in Southland have given quite a fillip to the sport, and they, have resulted in several fine young pacers being unearthed.

Only a few of those engaged in the Winton Club’s classic tomorrow have been produced in public so far, this being at the Wairio meeting when Turco beat Cheval d’Oro and Margaret Arion in an event for three-year-olds. Turco won in convincing style, but Cheval d’Oro lost a lot of ground and he will improve a good deal. Turco has always had a reputation for speed, but he is inclined to be an erratic colt and this may prejudice his chance. Cheval d’Oro will strip a better horse than at Wairio and it would not surprise to see him turn the tables on the Wairio candidate. He is a solid customer and stays well. Margaret Arion is likely to improve while a good opinion is held of Rollicking Rey. Of the others Sea Bom and Arion Mac may be best. The breeding of the juveniles in tomorrow’s race is of some importance, as the majority are members of successful families. Turco, who is by Rey de Oro is-’out of Wrackoda, a Wrack mare from that fine pony pacer, Soda, who took a two mile record of 4.35. Soda, who was also die dam of Sparkling Chimes, Ados and Loganville, was got by Harold Dillon from Franca, by Vancleve from Hush, also by Vancleve —a maternal line which has left many fine winners. Texas Ranger is by Arion Axworthy from Trixie Belle, the dam of Waterloo Direct, who won at Gore on Tuesday. Arion Axworthy. has another representative in Margaret Arion, a fine type of filly from Senorita, by Rey de Oro from Logan Chimes, by Logan Pointer from Curfew Bell, the grand-dam of a great pacer in Logan Derby. LADY DIRECTS FIRST Rosereywin is a filly by Rey de Oro from Lady Direct, a Harold Direct mare who showed winning form in Southland a few seasons back. Seaborn is a big raking youngster by Arion Axworthy from Fair Wave, who took a mile and a-quarter record of 2min 48 3-ssec. Fair Wave was got by Waverley from Fair Lady, the- dam of Sea Wave, Rollicking Wave, Chief Drusus and others. Fair Lady was by Our Thorpe from Lady Rothsoon (4min ,33sec), by Harold Rothschild from Too Soon—a fine producer at the Stevenson and McMath stud. Another representative of this maternal line is Rollicking Rey, a gelding by Rey de Ora from Rollicking Wave. Coleus ranks as a half-brother by Llewellyn to Azure, Arabia, Picotee

and Tritoma, their dam Azaleas, being by Brent Locanda. Arion Mac is by Arion Axworthy from Helen McGregor, by Coldstream Bells from a wellknown mare, Charity Belle, by Bellman. Cheval D’Oro is another representative of Rey de Oro. He is out of Erin’s Princess, a useful winner over all distances a few seasons back, by Erin’s King from a Rothschild mare. Raymond is also by Rey de Oro being out of Lady Adonis, the dam of Ozanam and Nelson Adonis, the latter the sire of a good winner in Stirling Lady. Lady Adonis was by Adonis from Wild Dona, by Wildwood from Lady Dudley, by Berlin. Two Crowns, Arion Maid and Sea Fortune all trace to the same maternal line. Arion Maid is by Arion Axworthy. from Fortune Maid, the latter a sister to Miss Adonis and half-sister to Erin’s Fortune. Erin’s Fortune is the dam of Sea Fortune, who is by Wrack and Miss Adonis is the dam of Two Crowns, by Rey de Oro. All three mares are out of Misfortune, the dam of Nelson’s Victory, Dan McGrew, Carver Doone and others. FROM GREY GIRL Rey Chimes is by Rey de Oro from Tuxedo Chimes, by Cathedral Chimqs from a King Tuxedo mare. Greyson is the first of the stock of Grey Girl, a mare who won several good sprint . events in Otago and Southland a few seasons back. Grey Girl was got by Charlie McKinney from a General Pet mare, his first produce, Greyson, being by Worthy Bond. Great Wolf is a halfbrother by Arion Axworthy to Direct Thorpe, their dam Lou Thorpe being by Our Thorpe from Lou Wilkes, by Harold Wilkes from Lady Kentucky. First Issue is a member of a great family. She is by Worthy Bond from First Author, a half-sister to Rocks Ahead, Ned Worthy, Nell Grattan and Aqua Bond. First Author was an unraced mare by Author Dillon from First Water, a good winner in her day and who has been a great success as a producer.

Straight Flight is by Llewellyn from z Woodburn Direct, by Harold Direct from Gracie Woodburn, by Quincey and tracing back to the imported mare Woodburn Maid, by Stirling. Oregon, a Rey de Oro filly, is out of that fine race mare Probationer, who was by Wrack from Our Nurse, the dam also of Sure, Chevalier and Salalon. Wise Choice is a half-brother by Rey de Oro to Happy Go Lucky, who was out of Queen Dulse, by Wrack from Wild Queen, a half-sister to Logan Chief. Sir Dighton’s dam Sunny Southland was a useful winner a few seasons back being by Sungod from a Four Chimes mare.
