ARRANGEMENTS FOR SPORTS Arrangements are being rapidly completed for the New Year’s Day sports at Tuatapere and a substantial bridge has been constructed over the backwater in the domain, thanks to the enthusiasm

of the committee and the co-operation of local citizens, notably Mr J. H. Williams, who supervised the erection of the bridge. Heavy totara piles were driven four feet down to a solid bottom. The bridge, which is now completed, is 14 feet wide and 60 feet long. It has been thoroughly tested by drawing a four-ton roller across it and no doubt it will stand for many years giving ready access to the newly-prepared parking area. Incidentally, the bridge affords spectators a splendid view up the willow-flanked stream which it surmounts.

The j/cturesque grounds are in firstclass order and the tracks are looking particularly well after being rolled in the recent heavy rain. The swans and paradise duck are thriving in their new surroundings and they have been joined there by a family of seven grey duck. Two mallards have also made their nest nearby. City visitors will appreciate the opportunity of watching these water fowl in their native haunt.

The Tuatapere Society is setting a fine example to sporting bodies throughout New Zealand by putting aside the whole profit of the year’s working to be devoted to patriotic purposes and it is to be hoped that this action will evoke the response it deserves from the general public.
