MOTOR-SHIP TAUPATA RUNS ASHORE
VESSEL REFLOATED AT HIGH TIDE (United. Press Association) BLENHEIM, December 28. The Anchor Company’s motor-ship Taupata (268 tons) grounded near Te Awaiti early this morning while en route to Lyttelton. She was refloated early in the afternoon and berthed at Picton about two o’clock. The vessel had been sheltering from high seas overnight in Queen Charlotte Sound when the mishap occurred. She was about to run through Tory Channel to resume her passage and was caught apparently in a strong tidal set. Before anything could be done she was swept on to the beach. At high tide she was refloated. As the extent of the damage is not known it was decided to bring her to Picton for an inspection. This afternoon was devoted to unloading her general cargo to enable a survey of the hull to be made.
The Taupata bears no outward sign of injury and is without a list. The master of the Taupata is Captain J. A. Hughan, the first officer, Mr R, F. Greenslade, and the second officer, Mr E. H. Willson. All are residents of Wellington. The Taupata was built by G. T. Niccol, Auckland, in 1930.
