TANKER BLOWN IN TWO

Attempt To Save

After Part

RESCUE OF CREW BY DESTROYER (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received December 28, 7.15 p.m.) LONDON, December 28. How the crew of the tanker San Alberto tried to navigate half the vessel to port after a German torpedo had bisected her on December 9 is revealed by the crew, who escaped in four boats just before the forepart sank. The captain and the occupants of three boats regained the after part, which was found to be staunch. They raised steam, switched on the lights and went slow astern to prevent the seas ripping off the plates whenever she faced head seas. The crew was eventually rescued by a destroyer.
