SOUTHLAND TOTAL NOW 1010 137 STILL WANTED FOR SECOND ECHELON The thousandth recruit to enlist at the Invercargill Defence Office for service in the special force was enrolled yesterday, when the total enlistments reached 1010. When 999 names had been received the defence officers awaited with interest the next enlistment; it was that of N. F. O'Grady, of Invercargill. . . . , Recruiting was much brisker yesterday, 18 men offering their services. It is thought that the appearance dunng the last fortnight of men on final leave has had a stimulating effect, and it is hoped that the present rate of recruiting will be maintained. When the men now awaiting medical examination have been dealt with it is estimated that there will be 150 fit men in the Southland district for the second echelon. One hundred and thirty-seven more fit men are needed by January 12 to fill Southland’s quota. The first recruiting posters, bearing the words “Men Wanted for Overseas Service” were received in Invercargill yesterday and will be displayed in prominent places in the city and towns. In addition to the men who left for Burnham yesterday morning 74 will depart this morning for Trentham and Papakura. They will travel by the usual express. Tomorrow morning 33 more will leave for Ngaruawahia. Today a new draft of 25 men, under Captain C. J. Pomeroy, will go into camp to fill gaps in the first echelon. This will be their first appearance in camp. Two of the recruits who enlisted yesterday did not want their names published. The other 16 were: Barry, Patrick Keven, labourer, Invercargill. VOLUNTEERS IN CENTRAL DISTRICT

(United Tress Association) WELLINGTON, December 28. Since recruiting began 15 weeks ago, 6101 men have volunteered in the Central Military District, embracing Wellington, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa and Taranaki districts. Of this total 3571 have been classed fit, 673 temporarily unfit and 804 permanently unfit; 2435 have been sent to camp, 473 are in reserved occupations and there is a balance available of 756.
