BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

START OF PAIRS EVENT

Good Play On Fast Greens 34 TEAMS SURVIVE SECTION PLAY SILVER AND VEITCH ELIMINATED Eighty-four pairs took part in section play in the pairs championship of the South Island bow'ls tournament on Invercargill greens yesterday. The weather was fine and warm for the greater part of the day and greens were fast—some were fiery. After four rounds of play 34 pairs qualified for post-section play which will be played on the sudden death principle today. One or two surprise results marked the day’s play, but generally known, form worked out fairly well and most of the champion pairs qualified. The most notable eliminations were those of A. E. Silver and J. A. Veitch, the wellperformed Dunedin pair who won the New Year pairs at Invercargill two years ago, A. E. Gardner and A. C. Campbell (Southland), who were regarded as having a strong combination, and J. D. Best and W. Anderson (Dunedin), another particularly strong pair. Each of these pairs was successful in only two of the four games played. Of the 34 pairs left in 13 are from' clubs from beyond Southland, so that visitors are strongly represented in the post-section play. A. French and L. Page, of West Harhour, struck good form on the Georgetown green, and if the greens are keen today they may be looked upon as having a good chance of getting through tq, the final rounds. S. Lawson and H. Gardiner (Dunedin) gained three wins; they make another strong pair capable of playing a prominent part in the final.. Several pairs gained four wins and several gained no successes at. all, but on the whole play was fairly even and many combinations were in doubt about qualifying until the last round. The rink championship will be started on five greens tomorrow.
