TAXI FARES NOT YET INCREASED
AUCKLAND INTERESTS (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 10. Until the effect of the increase in the cost of petrol on other forms of transport is ascertained it is not expected that the taxi interests in Auckland will make any move towards reconsideration of the question of fares. Indeed, it is stated that the position has never been officially discussed by the larger of' the two companies operating and that there have been no negotiations on the subject. A conference is pending in Wellington between the New Zealand Taxi Federation and other commercial transport organizations which may ’ conceivably affect the situation, and' it is expected that + he question of increased costs will be discussed at the quarterly meeting of the shareholders of the Atta Company on Thursday next. It is pointed out that the City Council governs taxi fares in Auckland, and though differences of ipinion exist among the taxi owners whether business would fall off if the charges were increased to cover the extra outlay on petrol of about 15/- a week on each car, no action is likely to be taken in the meantime.
