SECOND DAY AT WINTER SHOW

Judging In Carcass

Classes

HIGH STANDARD IN FRUIT SECTION

KEEN COMPETITION IN WOOL CLASSING

Cold and boisterous weather which prevailed yesterday was held to be responsible for a decrease in the attendance at the Southland Winter Show for the second day. The attendance during the day and evening sessions were smaller than last year, but there was a steady stream of visitors throughout the day and the bright and attractive features of the show were generally admired. , , , The door takings yesterday showed a substantial decrease on the figure for the second day of the 1938 show. The afternoon receipts were lower by £33/13/6 and the day’s takings showed a total decrease of £6O/19/6. The following are the takings for the day and evening sessions yesterday, together with the figures for the previous year:

Considerable interest was shown in the wool-classing competition during the morning and afternoon. Good entries were received both in the open and amateur classes and the standard of the classing was very good, the prizewinners securing high marks. The sheep carcass classes were judged yesterday. The lambs were of very good quality and typical of the

class of carcasses finding favour on the London market at the present time. The judge of the fruit section (Mr J. Waters) said the section was of a high standard and equal to any other district display in New Zealand. The fruit was very well prepared, almost perfect in sizing, and the colour was excellent, especially in the Jonathan and Delicious varieties. Some of the entries were spoilt through the stems being missing, and through insect bites. The championship class was a very good one, and though the three entries were from the one grower, Mr D. Martin, of Beaumont, there was little between the high standard of each. This exhibitor sent forward some splendid specimens in all classes. Many entries could not be expected from Southland because of the poor growing season, added the judge. ■ Awards in the classes judged yesterday were as follows: —
