KEEN INTEREST IN NEW ZEALAND
AMERICAN EXPORTERS AND RESTRICTIONS (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 12. American exporters are taking a keen interest in New Zealand, according to Mr W. C. Flake, American trade commissioner at Sydney, who is a through passenger by the Mariposa. “There was an immediate rush for information,” said Mr Flake, referring to the reaction to the New Zealand import restrictions. He was in Washington at the time and it was first thought that the Dominion Government was merely putting into effect the machinery for restriction, and that permits would be granted when applied for. It was thought the Government was merely “loading the gun.” “It took some time to realize that the regulations were to operate immediately, and that the gun had not only been loaded, but ; the trigger had been pulled,” he added. I The immediate application of the regu- I lations had caused a painful surprise in some quarters. Many people did not realize the Dominion’s need for preserving her overseas sterling funds. The question was now being asked how long the restrictions were to last.
