Earl Stewart Boxing Shield

The Earl Stewart Memorial Shield to be awarded annually to the boxing association securing the most points at the Nev/ Zealand amateur championships will be awarded for competition for the first time at the championships at Invercargill in September. Earl Stewart was well known throughout New Zealand and Australia as a referee. As a boxer in pre-war days he took his part in many amateur tournaments, and when he became associated with the New Zealand army sports team in England during the war, he was honoured by being appointed one of the referees at the inter-Allied boxing carnival. After his return to New Zealand he was regularly engaged as a referee in most of the important boxing events staged in the North Island. He was born in Dunedin, but spent the greater part of his life in Wellington.
