Miss Rebe Wilson Is No 6 In N.Z. Tennis Ranking
Miss R. J. Wilson, of Balfour, Southland’s most promising woman tennis player in recSnt years, has been ranked No. 6 in the annual ranking list compiled by “Server,” a well-known authority, who writes for New Zealand Sporting Life. “Server” bases his rankings on form displayed during the past season and qualifies his choice by stating that “where direct opposition is lacking there is no method other than an estimation of probabilities to arrive at an idea of relative merit.” He places his best 10 in the following order:— 1. M. Beverley. 2. D. Miller. 3. T. Poole. 4. J. Douthett. 5. E. Plummer. 6. R. J. Wilson. 7. I. Poole. 8. H. Elsom. 9. P. Cooke. 10. B. L. Bishop. Of Miss Wilson “Server” has the following to say:—“There is little doubt that Miss R. J. Wilson has been justifying the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association’s estimate of her, for her game is one of consistent improvement. For one who gets so little practice on grass courts she does remarkably well when she competes in tournaments where the court surface is grass. She has the makings of a fine all-court player, being not afraid to take the net behind deep drives from the baseline. She is a piay-
er of brains as well as of strokes. I place her number six.” Miss Wilson was runner-up to Miss D. Miller in the singles and with Miss Miller won the doubles at the Otago Lawn Tennis Association’s championships at Easter.
