In Town And Out

Work on Homer Tunnel After a series of warm winds, most of the snow at the Homer Tunnel has disappeared, and work on the tunnel will be resumed for the season early this week. The contractors have progressed a third of the way through the bottom heading tunnel, a distance of about 1000 feet. About 60 men will be employed on the tunnel. Art Exhibition Closes

The Southland Art Society’s exhibition of rota pictures, which was held in the Southland Building Society’s old building last week, was closed on Saturday night. About 400 adults and 800 school children visited the exhibition, and as a result of this keen public support the society has been left in a sound financial position. It is hoped that it will be able to hold a better show next year. An effort is being made to acquire a permanent collection and pictures will fie. selected from these annual displays to add to the nucleus of half-a-dozen pictures that the society already possesses.

Sandfly Killer Wanted “I know many people, who, on returning from holidays at Milford Sound said they would never return, because of the sandflies,” said Mr G. S. Morris, at a meeting of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). This did not only refer to the sound, he said, but to other bushland resorts in the south. It was a shame, said Mr Morris, that these trips should lose popularity because of the pest, and on his recommendation it was decided to write to the Cawthron Institute asking if any method of exterminating the insect was known. “Learn to Swim” Week

Spring Display in Gardens Visitors to Invercargill for Labour Day and citizens not leaving the city will have an excellent opportunity to see Queen’s Park and the Public Gardens at the height of the spring flowering display. This is the best season of the year for Queen’s Park, where the rhododendrons, flowering cherries and apples, Chilean fire bush and many other flowering scrubs and trees present a magnificent sight. In the Public Gardens the rock gardens, glass-houses and aviary are popular attractions at the present time. Government Films

A new building is being added to the Government Publicity Department’s studios at Miramar, Wellington. Together with a considerable • quantity of new equipment, this represents a great advance in the facilities for film, poster and diorama production and will greatly facilitate the production of the centennial film; on which work is to begin soon. The building which will be used as a display studio for poster and diorama work, will measure about 70 feet by 40 feet. It will release the main studio in the old building for film purposes only, and will enable more elaborate studio work to be carried out, as is likely to be the case in the centennial film. In addition there are a new modern camera, sound recorder, sound printer and automatic developer, eliminating manual handling of .- the film. New studio lighting is another improvement. The studios are now equipped with up-to-date technical apparatus, and their output is likely to be improved both in quality and quantity. '
