NEW HOSPITAL FOR SEAMEN
MODERN TREATMENT OF SHOCK CASES (British Official Wireless) (Received October 23, 6.30 pun.) RUGBY, October 22. The new buildings of a hospital in dock land, opened by Queen Mary, are regarded in medical circles as embodying the last word in modern technique for the treatment of fractures and the rehabilitation of patients suffering from fractures. Prevention or mitigation of shock is the first consideration. Ambulances back into a heated bay, immediately off which is a shock room kept at a high temperature and with the most modern surgical equipment for the treatment of shock, such as apparatus for radiant heat baths and saline and
blood transfusions. The new fracture theatre has a specially-fitted bakelite operating table, which with the auxiliary apparatus in the adjoining room permits X-ray photographs to be taken in the .course of an operation and exhibited through an illuminated panel in the wall. , , An important part of the rehabilitation centre is a gymnasium, provided out of a gift of £lO,OOO by Lord Nuffield. Contributions to the funds of the hospital have also been made by the Shipping Federation and the Seamen’s Union. Among the patients at present in the hospital, whom Queen Mary saw in the wards, were sailors of many nationalities.
