SLY FOX WINS AGAIN

Trentham Stakes Won

By Defaulter

TE HERO. SOUNDLY BEATEN

(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, October 22. Silver Sight was sent out favourite for the Rimu Hurdles, but evidently he could not act in the altered track conditions as he was never dangerous. Beau Gallante went to the front with five furlongs to go and led over the last fence from Iddo, Pango and Sporting Blood. Iddo did best in the run home and comfortably beat Beau Gallante, with Pango a close third. Ambition, who was prominent for the first mile, was a., poor fourth, with a big gap to Silver Sight and Southern Blood. Round Score tailed off. The winner is by Tractor from Belgian Queen and his effort was a pronounced improvement on that of the first day. There were 28 starters in the Trial Stakes and the first out, Lord Cavendish, was never headed. He was followed into the straight by Punarua, Good Passage, Old Bill, Synthetic, Beaupartir and Kindly. Beaupartir was responsible for a game effort to get up to the leader and had the latter stretched right out to secure a halflength verdict. Good Passage held on for third money two lengths in front of Old Bill, who was followed by Coronation, Chere Arnie, Te Morehu and Punarua. Great Quex'bolted twice before the start and was withdrawn. THREE-YEAR-OLDS MEET Defaulter was a short-priced favourite for the Trentham Stakes and he outclassed his opponents. He was-slow over the early part and gave the pacemaker, Te Hero, six lengths start turning for home, but with another furlong covered he was alongside his northern rival. The pair only raced abreast for about 100 yards when Te Hero was inclined to bore out and Defaulter then shot away to carry on for a decisive win from Te Hero, who had to be ridden right out to stave off a late run by Gay Son, who was in last place until the last furlong. Peerless was fourth, four lengths away; in front of Homily, Surmount and Colfort. .

Nightdress justified his favouritism for the Heretaunga Handicap by winning narrowly but impressively. He Was always well placed behind the pacemakers, Son and Heir and Royal Tinge, and followed Son and Heir into the straight. He had drawn to the front 50 yards from the post, but was then tackled by Auto Sweep and a hard tussle ensued. Nightdress responded to a final call to hold his advantage. Earl, Colossus finished well into third place] in front of Rustem and Son and Heir. FIRM FAVOURITE BEATEN One of the shortest-priced favourites of the meeting, Daniel Defoe, suffered defeat in the Karitane Handicap. He and Submission were first out and raced abreast in front of Baran and 1 Algerian until 50 yards from the post, where Submission had the favourite’s measure and gradually drew away. Algerian was a good third in front of Glohe Trotter, with Winning Rival and Baran close up. The winner is a filly by Limond from Homage and was retained by Mr G. M. Currie. A brother to Hunting Blood, and a New Zealand Cup candidate, Sly Fox, made his record five wins and one second in his last seven starts by a meritorious win in the Watkins Handicap. He was well up over the first mile, but was then sent back and was not prominent again until well into the straight Francis Drake was first to enter the run home from Dictate, Silver River, Cricket,' Master Cyklon and Sly Fox, but with a furlong to go Dictate was in charge and his victory was being proclaimed when Sly Fox come at him and after an interesting tussle the latter gradually gained the upper hand to win going away. Cricket was a close third in front of Boomerang, with Francis Drake, Master Cyklon, Tidewaiter, Trench Fight and Ned Cuttie following in that odrer. WIN FOR COUNTERBLAST Counterblast scored a popular success in the Awatea Handicap. She was in close attendance with Mittie, Rollicker and Majority entering the course proper and these all raced in a bunch to within a few strides of the post, where Counterblast finished with a burst to take the’honours from Majority, with Mittie and Rollicker close up in front of Old Surrey. Brunhild, Peter Beckford and Gay Chou. The surprise result of the meeting was provided by the result of the Belmont Handicap," all three placed horses being in moderate demand only. Rowana led into the straight from White Gold, Vadanoe, Hagan and Trebor, but inside the distance Misurina was in front and Tom Tom appeared from a rear position. Misurina carried on for a good win from Tom Tom, with Vadanoe a close third, in front of Dark Eagle, Gay Artist and White Gold.
