NEW GENERAL MANAGER

Appointment To Bank Of N.Z. PRESENT ASSISTANT TO TAKE OVER (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 21. The Board of Directors of the Bank of New Zealand announced today the appointment of Mr H. R. H. Chalmers, at present assistant general manager, to be general manager in succession to Mr Dawson who retires on April 30 next. Mr P. L. Porter, the manager at Christchurch will become assistant general manager, Mr L. Brinkman succeeding him at Christchurch. Mr F. E. Ashby will become the Wellington manager. The directors of the bank also announce an interim dividend of 1/- a share on ordinary shares and of 3J per cent, on D long-term mortgage shares, these to be paid in New Zealand currency on December 10. FORMERLY MANAGER IN INVERCARGILL MR PORTER’S APPOINTMENT AS ASSISTANT (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, October 21. Mr P. L. Porter, who has been appointed assistant general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, was born in Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay. He joined the Bank of New Zealand , in 1904 at Queenstown and was soon transferred to Invercargill. From 1910 until 1919 he was in head office and after receiving the appointment as assistant accountant at Wellington he was transferred to a similar position at Christchurch in 1921. He was appointed manager at Ashburton in 1922 and at Invercargill in 1924. He went to Suva in 1926 as the bank’s manager in Fiji. During 1928 and 1929 he was attached to the London office as assistant to the manager. In the two following years until his return to Christchurch in 1931 he did inspection work in Australia and New Zealand. In 1932 Mr Porter was promoted from assistant manager to manager in Christchurch. Mr Porter is related to one of the oldest Canterbury families. His grandfather, Mr David Porter, arrived at Lyttelton in the Cressy in 1850 and with his two brothers took up land near what is now known as Porters Pass. His father was for many years manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Wyndham.
