FRENCHMEN SEEK UNDERSTANDING
Attitude To German Aims PLEDGE TO RENOUNCE WAR SUGGESTED GRANTING OF FREE HAND IN CENTRAL EUROPE (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright) (Received October 21, 10.30 p.m.) PARIS, October 20. The first far-reaching steps to achieve a close understanding with Germany and, possibly, Italy, are reported to have been discussed at a conference between the Prime Minister (M. Edouard Daladier) and the Foreign Minister (M. Georges Bonnet) and also in talks between M. Bonnet and the British Ambassador (Sir Eric Phipps).
The Paris correspondent of The Times says it is believed M. Bonnets probable aims are:— (1) A mutual renunciation of war on the lines of the Anglo-German Declaration. (2) The granting of a free hand to Germany in Central and' Eastern Europe. , ■ (3) Unobtrusive abandonment of the French-Soviet Pact. (4) The possible cession of the Cameroons. The Paris correspondent of The Daily Telegraph says it is understood that Herr Hitler, when bidding farewell to tiie retiring French Ambassador, M. Andre Francois-Poncet, renewed his offer of a Franco-German non-aggression pact.
