SILK STOCKINGS ARE NECESSARY TO WOMEN

We women of today are all agreed that silk stockings are a necessity—in fact rit has been said by a male cynic that a pair of new and expensive silk stockings do more than all the combined physical culture exercises ever invented to make a woman walk correctly. But have you ever considered how much your silk stockings cost you in a year? Can you take the expenses every month in your stride, as it were, or does a newly-run ladder cause you to wonder ihow you can work the expense in to your budget by economizing on something else? Here are two points of view on silk stockings, both having been expressed at the Open Door International Conference held recently in England. Dr Salchow, of Sweden, gave a

man’s idea on the subject when he “Many women, although they have money enough to do so, do not eat the right kind of food. They often use their money instead for something which is not absolutely necessary for their health. They buy silk stockings, face creams and cosmetics. I think that education in this respect is necessary.”

Now consider the reply made by Mrs Elizabeth Abbott, who, I think, voices the opinion most women hold on ' the matter: —

“We do not live by bread alone. Women, as well as men, need a full life For centuries men have had their tobacco money, their beer money and their betting money every week. lam glad that women today are making the balance even with their silk stockings and their cigarettes.”
