HIGH GLEE OUT OF ACTION
Petersham Advances In Favour BLACK BANNER’S GOOD RECOVERY There will be racing at Gore and Trentham and trotting at Auckland and Greymouth today. In Favour Petersham appears to have advanced in favour for the Waikaka Handicap at Gore this afternoon. Rider Injured C. G. Goulsbro, rider of Anopheles in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham on Thursday was kicked at the post by Baran and suffered a compound fracture of the shinbone. Three-year-old Clash A meeting of Defaulter, Gay Son, Surmount and Te'Hero in the Trentham Stakes will be the principal attraction at the second day of the Wellington meeting this afternoon. Useful Effort When Master Dingle finished third to Kilrobe and Adina at Kurow he was last away and it was a good effort on his part to finish as close up as he did. He is engaged at Gore today. Two Engagements Lord Nuffield and Astaire are both engaged in two races at Gore today and whichever race is selected either can be expected to shape well. Lord Nutfield, a winner in his last start, was one of the best three-year-olds raced last season. p. Boyle’s Team Besides Merry Simon and Red Owl, P. Boyle has a novice jumper by Nightcall from' a Balboa mare in . Regular. Now a five-year-old, this gelding stands fully 17 hands and has shown some ability as a jumper. His sire Nightcall was got by Night Raid from Ruena, the dam of Parasang, a good winner over country. Boyle does not hold any hopes for Last Post ever racing again. While he walks quite soundly his shoulder injury becomes apparent when given any work. Black Banner and Faculties are both sound again, while Bally Brit will not be placed back into, work until well on in the season. Wild Career Wild Career has been taken up by W. Anderton, who has Ardmayle in work at Invercargill. Wild Career, who looks really well, will begin his preparation after this week’s Gore meeting. The two-year-old, Bulldog, in the same stable, has been gelded. Riders Engaged A. M. Cassells will ride Astaire today and W. Jenkins will be on Norseman and Gay Vixen. A Hyades Colt The brown colt by Foxbridge (son of Foxlaw) from Hyades, purchased for lOOOgns in New Zealand last January by Sir Sidney Snow and Mr Allan Lewis, has reached Sydney. The colt who is a half-brother of the Derby winner Ammon Ra, has gone to B. R. Payten’s Randwick stable. Made Money His owner was at Wingatui on Thursday morning to see Made Money gallop, and was naturally disappointed when he pulled up lame. Made Money will go to Gore but it is unlikely that his New Zealand Cup engagement will be continued. High Glee Amiss After galloping on Tuesday morning High Glee was sore after cooling down, and will not be a starter at Gore or at Riccarton next month. His owner intends spelling him for a short while until the extent of the lameness is definitely ascertained. The Crowded Calendar It was stated at a meeting of the committee of the South Canterbury Jockey Club held last week that as the club was not able to race on election day, there was no chance of securing a date this side of the New Year. The committee decided to go into the matter of securing a suitable date next year. A letter was received from the Canterbury District Committee advising that the District Trust Fund was in a very depleted state and it had been decided that it was very necessary to take steps to restore the fund to a reasonable figure. A scheme had been worked out based on an annual contribution from each club of 2| per cent, of the 1 per cent, rebated on the totalizator tax. That would bring it on last year’s figures to £lB5 17/6. It was stated that the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s contribution would be. £1? 9/6, and it was agreed to support the scheme.
Ajax’s Good Record Ajax, the greatest horse of the moment in Australia, has won his last nine consecutive races. In all, he has won 14 times from 18 starts, and his prize money totals £20,925. Great horses of the past have strung together long winning sequences. Gloaming and
Desert Gold hold the record in Australia and New Zealand with 19 each. Phar Lap had 14 successive victories. Limerick. 13 and Eurythmic 11. Peter Pan, who won two Melbourne Cups, at one stage won eight events in a row. Ajax heads the present-day racehorses in the way of stake earnings, but 22 horses have won more than £20,000 during their turf career. Ajax, however, has plenty of time to top £30,000 and more. Phar Lap’s £66,738 included the Agua Caliente Handicap (£13,700). Taking the world at large, Sun Beau (America) holds the record (£74,488), and War Admiral, with £64,575, is creeping up.
