SOUTHLAND A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

DISTRICT COMPETITION IN EXPORT LAMBS At a meeting of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday a letter was received from the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board enclosing several amendments for the district competition in export lambs for the 1938-39 season. The amendments included the following: “To ensure the best exhibit going forward to London, an exhibitor entering two pens (six lambs) may have the best three lambs selected, after killing, from the two pens entered. It should be noted that pens must be kept intact for local judging. This procedure enables a comparison to be made by farmers interested, as between the awards for ‘live’ judging and the awards for the ‘on hooks’ judging. Afterwards the lambs in two pens from the same farmer may be regrouped for selection of the best exhibit to go forward from the district for London judging. . “The 15 pens (45 lambs) in each district which are selected to be shipped Home, shall be taken over by the board at the date of killing, and promptly paid for at ruling schedule rates. “The board is also to issue diplomas for presentation to the winners of its cash prizes in each island and to the owners of each of the best 15 pens selected to represent their district’s entry to be shipped Home for display and judging on Smithfield. “Several agricultural and pastoral associations are already following the practice of offering prizes for the best pens shipped from their own particular district to encourage competition in each district. The board commends this practice to all agricultural and pastoral associations controlling distric: entries, and to assist in this direction the board will make a grant of £lO to the controlling association in each district from which an entry is received, for such association to allocate for prize money in the competition in its district as it thinks best. This amount will be paid to each controlling association as soon as the field day has been held in,

the various districts, provided that no payment will be made to any, association whose district competition lapses.” It was decided to show purebred sheep under natural conditions only. Mr W. Falconer presided over a big attendance.
