MAINTENANCE OF ROAD
DIPTON-C ASTLEROCK HIGHWAY BOARD TO CONTINUE SUBSIDY Advice of the intention of the Main Highways Board to continue paying the subsidy on the maintenance of the Dipton-Castlerock road was received by the Southland County Council yesterday. “I have now to advise that the Main Highways Board has decided to continue payment to the Southland and Wallace County Councils of the detour subsidy of £3 for £1 on actual maintenance of the Dipton-Castlerock road until sufficient time has elapsed to show how traffic is divided between the two routes,” wrote Mr W. G. Pearce, resident engineer for the Public Works Department “This will place the local bodies in no worse position than they were formerly, and at the same time will enable the board to form a better idea whether a greater or lesser amount of traffic uses the Dipton-Castlerock connection after the completion of the Dipton-Lumsden route. If in due course it should happen that there is no more traffic on the Castlerock road than th§ Dipton-Lumsden road, the adjustmeif of the route will be reviewed.” Councillors expressed pleasure at fatf decision of the board. “It shows they realize their responsibilities,” said the chairman, Cr G. W. Whittingham. It was decided to send CQpies of the letter to the Southland Progress League and the Automobile Association (Southland).
