The quarter-finals of the women’s singles were a triumph for the Americans, three of whom enter the semifinals, together with the Danish player, Frau Sperling. They not only gained three victories, but won their games with convincing scores. 'England’s leading string, Miss Kath Stammers, made little - impression on Mrs Helen Wills Moody, and Mme Mathieu, in spite of her great record in tournament play and her recent good form in the French championships, was able to win only five games from Miss Alice Marble. Another American, Mrs Fabyan, came close to causing an upset when she gained a big lead in her match with the wonderfully steady Danish player, Frau Sperling. Miss Helen Jacobs won further laurels by defeating Mlle Jedrzejowska. With a good service, and a tremendously strong forehand for a woman, the Polish player is no easy opponent to dispose of, and last year reached the finals of both the American and Wimbledon championships. The women’s singles has now reached a most interesting -stage, and it remains to be seen whether Helen Wills Moody can stage a record ‘come-back,” repeating her success in 1935”, when she won the title for the seventh time. Criticis in England consider that at the age of 32 the American is capable of winning at Wimbledon for the eighth time.

In the women’s doubles the young Australian pair, Nancy Wynne and Thelma Coyne, were beaten but not disgraced by the second seeded pair, Alice Marble and Mrs Fabyan, who are the holders of the American doubles championship. Malfroy and. t his Czech partner are enjoying some success in the men's doubles; their victims in the fourth round, John Olliff and Robert Tinkler, are well-known English players. Budge continues to have such convincing wins in the men’s doubles with Mako, and in the mixed doubles with Alice Marble, that it would not be surprising to find him creating a new record to hold all three titles for the second year in succession.
