SUPPLY OF ARMS FOR SPAIN
Report About U.S.A. Not Confirmed
INCONSISTENT WITH PREVIOUS POLICY NEWS CAUSES SURPRISE IN LONDON (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received May 6, 8.40 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 6. The State Department does not confirm the report that the Administration has decided to support the resolution of Senator Gerald P. Nye (North Dakota) that the embargo on arms for Spain should be lifted, says the Washington correspondent of The New York Herald-Tribune. Such a course would be inconsistent with the department’s policy hitherto and would embarrass the Government in the pursuit of its objective of holding strictly aloof from entanglement in European conflicts. Senator Nye’s resolution would not simply lift the arms embargo, but would permit sales to the Loyalist Government and not allow them to General Franco.
The British Government is awaiting an authoritative statement from Washington about Senator Nye’s reported proposal that the United States embargo on war supplies to Spain should be lifted, says the diplomatic correspondent of The Times, London. The writer adds that the news has caused a surprise. It seems late in the day for the proposal to be put forward, and the reasons for it are hardly clear' in London, although one effect would immediately be clear, namely, one more stone would be thrown into, the troubled waters of non-intervention.
The Loyalist Government has sent a Note to the United States promising a plebiscite after the war, in which the people will express their will on the nation’s social structure and a pledge of a political amnesty to those Spaniards co-operating in the work of reconstruction. FRANCO DRIVING ON VALENCIA TROOPS MEETING SAVAGE RESISTANCE LONDON, May 5. The Madrid correspondent of 'The Daily Telegraph says that rebel aerial bombardment of Valencia killed 14 persons and wounded 40. Bombs struck a French merchantman and destroyed 30 houses. The Saragossa correspondent of the newspaper says that General Franco has resumed his drive against Valencia with troops protected on the flanks by warships and aeroplanes, but is meeting with a savage resistance.
