PRISON TERMS MAY BE LENGTHENED

INTOXICATION CHARGES AGAINST MOTORISTS

(United Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 6. “If these offences continue, the term of imprisonment will have to be lengthened,” said Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court when Albert Ainsworth, aged 50, a carrier, was charged with being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motortruck on the Great North road on Thursday. He entered a plea of guilty. “I have given careful and sympathetic consideration to what the accused’s counsel has said,” the Magistrate added. “However, the interest of the public outweighs those of the individual and I must sentence him to imprisonment.” Accused was sentenced to two weeks' imprisonment and his licence was cancelled for two years.
