TENNIS
EXHIBITION GAMES ASSOCIATION’S RULING The playing of exhibition tennis matches at club courts throughout Southland was discussed .at a meeting of the executive ot the Southland Tennis Association, and it was decided that from January 1 no players under the Southland Association would be permitted to engage in exhibition tennis without the permission of the association.
The secretary of the Northern District Sub-Association wrote advising that Eastern had won the Hamilton Shield by 13 sets to 11 and lodging a challenge for a shield match this season. In view of the challenge being in order it was unanimously decided to accept it. The order of challenge matches for the remainder of the season will therefore be—Central, Western, Northern. It was resolved to draw the attention of clubs to the rule requiring that matches commence at 1.30 p.m. The Otago Lawn Tennis Association advised that it would support the nomination of Miss R. Wilson for inclusion in the New Zealand girls’ team to visit Australia in March.
The West Otago Sub-Association reported that the date suggested by the Southland executive for the annual match was not suitable and proposed as an alternative that the match be played at Waikaka on January 8. This was agreed to. The Southland Caledonian Society requested that no important matches be played on January 15, on the occasion of the revival of the Caledonian Games in Invercargill. The executive decided to cancel all matches except the C grade, the size of that competition precluding such a step. In view of his impending departure from Invercargill, Mr Roy Howe wrote resigning from the coaching committee. The resignation was accepted and it was decided to thank Mr Howe for his services.
The secretary reported that Mr William Baird had offered a challenge cup to the association for annual competition and suggested that it be attached to the men’s doubles championship event at the Christmas tourament. This was agreed to and members spoke in appreciation of Mr Baird’s generosity. It was decided to arrange a return match with Western for a Saturday in February. The Dominion Association advised that A. C. Stedman and D. C. Coombe would arrive in Invercargill on January 4 for the purpose of playing exhibition tennis. It was decided to hold the exhibitions on the Invercargill Club’s courts on Wednesday afternoon, January 5. The meeting was attended by Messrs P. F. de la Perrelle (chairman), S. McMillan. J.
