THE WEATHER UNSETTLED: INTERMITTENT RAIN

(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, December 6. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland, as issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington: Moderate to strong westerly to southerly winds, reaching gale force in some exposed positions. Weather unsettled, with intermittent rain, and becoming cooler. Seas rather rough to rough. Following is the Dominion forecast: Weather cloudy to overcast in the western districts from Taranaki southwards and the southern portion of the South Island, with scattered rain. Elsewhere fair at first but later conditions becoming more generally unsettled, with rain developing in most districts. Temperatures becom-

ing cooler tomorrow. General Situation.—A shallow depression has passed to the east of the South Island but another and complex one now covers the northern and eastern portions of the Tasman Sea. Winds.—Moderate to strong northerly winds, reaching gale force in a few exposed positions in the far north and south and about Cook Strait. A change to southerlies is setting in soon in the far south and extending over most of the Dominion within the next 24 hours. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rather rough to rough south of Cape Egmont and in the Cook and Foveaux Straits are-s. Elsewhere slight to moderate, but rising north of East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea, moderate to strong winds, northerly at first in the northern portion and southerly in the southern, but southerlies shortly becoming general. Seas moderate to rather rough.

The weather in Invercargill yesterday was fine and warm. A strong wind blew from the west. At one o’clock this morning the weather was calm and fine. The barometer readings for the last two mornings and Saturday are as follows; This morning (rising) 29.76 in. Monday 2960 m. Saturday 29.87 m.
