BLUFF THE PRESBYTERIAN SUNDAY SCHOOL

ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING

The Presbyterian Church was well filled on Sunday afternoon for the annual break-up and prize giving in the Sunday school. Many members of the Methodist congregation were in the gathering. The Rev. T. A. Speer, who presided, expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present and extended a special welcome to Methodist friends. Last year’s function had been postponed because of the epidemic, Mr Speer said, but since the Sunday school reopened there had been good progress made, reflecting credit on the teachers. Sunday school lessons were really meant to supplement home training, the speaker said, and added that parents showed their loyalty to the church by sending their children along regularly. Parents owed a debt of gratitude to the teachers for the selfsacrificing work of the latter week by week and it was encouraging to those responsible for religious instruction to have the sessions well attended.

A pleasing programme, arranged by Miss Dorothy Stalker, was given by the children, Miss Stalker playing the accompaniments. The programme was as follows: Opening hymn, “Banner of the Cross,” Sunday School children; Books of the Old Testament, Ngaire Johnson; vocal quartette, “Nearer, Still Nearer,” Murray Hamilton, Ken Speer, George Johnson, Ron Lowe; duet, Irene Williamson and Noeline McKenzie; psalm, Mavis White; song, Winifred McKenzie; song, Dorothy Mason; recitations, Ron Lowe, Ken Speer, Cecily Winter; song, Rita Calder; psalm, Leonie Williamson; playette and song, Rita Calder, Jean Jamieson, Ngaire Johnston, Leonie Williamson, Cecily Winter, Isobel Cheyne, Dorothy Mason, Murray Hamilton, Ron Lowe; vocal quartette, Dorothy Mason, Alison Winter, Ken Speer, Cyril Calder; song and chorus, Winifred McKenzie, Ray Cameron, Phyllis Ramage, Mavis White, Elaine Jamieson, Dorothy Johnston, Marie Murdoch, Sylvia McKenzie, Ruth Winter. Hymns were also sung by children and congregation. Mr Speer asked the Rev. G. KnowlesSmith (Methodist Church) to present the Sunday School prizes. Before doing so Mr Knowles-Smith voiced his pleasure at being present and said that the little ones had given a splendid programme which was a credit to them and their teacher. He invited all present to attend the break-up and prize giving in the Methodist Church next Sunday afternoon and presented prizes as follows: Mr Speer’s class (Junior Bible class), Jean Winter, Doris Pearce, Lily Calder, James Goodall, George Lindquist; Miss Stalker’s class, Rita Calder 1, Cecily Winter 2, Isobel Cheyne 3, Dorothy Mason 4; Ken Speer 1, George Johnston 2, Cyril Calder 3; attendance, Ron Lowe, Robert Cheyne, Blair Driscoll, Colin Calder; Miss McLeod’s class, Leonie Williamson, Jean Jamieson, Helen Nicholson, Dale Mehaffey, Ngaire Johnston, Joan Mehaffey, Alison Winter, James Mutch, Murray Hamilton; Miss Lopdell’s class, Betty Laker, Dorothy Johnston, Ray Cameron, Marie Murdoch, Jean Vickery, Elaine Ferguson, Ruth Winter, Sylvia McKenzie, Winifred McKenzie, Helen Stewart, John Jamieson, Charles Stewart, Billy Vickery, Bruce Jamieson, Bruce Lowe, Roy Mathieson, Harvey Pearce, Wallace King, Ewan Jamieson, Cliff Skeggs; special prizes for scrap books, Helen Stewai-t, Winifred McKenzie, Roy Mathieson, Bruce Ewan and John Jamieson; Mr J.
