NEW BRIGHTON SENSATION
Disqualified For Three Months
OWNER, DRIVER AND HORSE There was a sensation at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday when C. Johnston, owner of De Soto, J. B. Pringle, the driver, and the horse were disqualified for three months. This finding was reached by the judicial committee after the running of the Mace Memorial Handicap, the principal race of the day. The charges against Johnston and Pringle were that they did not race and drive the horse to win. After evidence had been heard it was decided that the owner, driver and horse should be disqualified for three months. Starting from 84yds behind De Soto was fourth favourite each way in the Mace Memorial Handicap, which was won by Plutus in 4min 34sec. The race was an unusually slow run one, the first half-mile taking 1.13, the mile in 2min 20 2-ssec, the mile and a-half in 3min 30 2-ssec and the full journey 4min 34sec. De Soto would more than likely have been a candidate for the Auckland Trotting Cup and other important races at Epsom at Christmas.
