EXHIBITION OF WORK
Southland Technical College BOTH SESSIONS WELL ATTENDED Both sessions yesterday at the exhibiton of students’ work at the Southland Technical College were well attended. In the evening a constant stream of visitors passed through the various rooms, and at times there must have been hundreds of persons inspecting the exhibits. A display of drill by a squad of girls was an interesting interlude. One of the most popular exhibits was a model of the south-west part of Southland. This exhibit provided what would be an aerial view from a height of about 15 miles. The model showed the profound glaciation of the southern fiordland, the suitability of such places as Mataura, Oreti and Five Rivers for farming purposes, and the possibilities of the development of the hinterland of Invercargill and Gore, much of which at present is used only for grazing purposes. The model showed the road up to Eglinton Valley and the lakes district, and to those parts of Southland where coal and gold are mined, where clays suitable for tiles and bricks are found and where the chief scenes of settlement lie. The exhibit also showed why Invercargill was the capital of Southland. It could clearly be seen that the city was the gateway to the rich farming lands of the interior, to the alluring beauties of the lakes district and to the scenic attractions of Stewart Island. Another exhibit greatly admired was the new office desk for use in the office of the principal (Mr C. A. Stewart).
