ASSAULT ON SHIP’S DOCTOR
SEAMAN PLEADS GUILTY (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 20. J. Hamer, a seaman, was charged before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., today with assault and pleaded guilty. “He is probably the least culpable of the men who struck me,” said Dr J. L. Barford, of the steamer Tainui. He evidently thought he was acting for his friend. Witness said accused and another came to his cabin on Monday evening both under the influence of drink. Hamer disputed statements witness had made in a letter to the hospital authorities about a man who had been admitted from the ship. Later several drunken men used abusive language to witness and accused struck him in the face. Accused went outside and two other men struck witness. Accused said he was not drunk, but in a temper. He thought his friend had not had a fair 'go. The Magistrate: And you thought striking the ship’s doctor would help your friend. Accused was fined £2, in default 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour.
