TENNIS EASTERN SOUTHLAND LADDERS The Eastern Southland Lawn Tennis selection committee has chosen the district ladders as follows:— Men’s Ladder.—D. S. McLeod, L. G. Townsend, A. Sharp, L. T. Cockerill, P. Welsh, C. Baird, D. M. McLeod, C. Mason, A. Strang, J. Calder, F. Hutton, Scott, W. Irvine, C. Rout, G. L. Gardyne. Women’s Ladder.—Miss K. Jopp, Mrs W. Irvine, Miss L. Jopp, Miss M. Anderson, Mrs F. Townsend, Miss E. Graham, Mrs McFarlane, Mrs L. T. Cockerill, Mrs Woodward, Miss Shearer, Miss H-. Baird, Mrs M. Penny, Miss A. Sherborne, Mrs Rout, Mrs L. Traynor. Interesting alterations to the ladder rules are: (a) That a player who is in any of the first seven positions on either ladder may challenge the player immediately above him or her, provided the player challenged has no challenge out; (b) that any other player on the ladder may challenge any player on the ladder up to an including the player in the seventh position, providing the latter has no challenge out; (c) if the challenge is successful, the winner shall occupy a position on the ladder immediately above the player beaten; (d) if the challenge be unsuccessful the challenger’s position shall not be altered. OBITUARY The death has occurred at Gote of Mr John Baldwin, who was well known in the sporting circles of the town. Mr Baldwin was bom at Gore and was the third son of Mrs and the late Mr David Baldwin. He received his education at Gore and was apprenticed to the tailoring trade under Mr J. F. Densem. He later began a business of his own and became well known as a tailor in Gore for many years. He was a keen sport and played a prominent part in Rugby circles of the town, being an active playing member of the Pioneer Club for 20 years. He was a member of the Excelsior Club when several members left and formed the Pioneer Club. He was captain of the Pioneer Club’s senior team for many years and also represented Southland. When he retired from the game Mr Baldwin still took a keen interest in the sport and was a referee for many years. He was the president of the Eastern Southland Referees’ Association. Mr Baldwin was also a prominent road and track cyclist in his younger days. He was a playing member of the Gore Bowling Club and an honorary life member of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association. About 29 years ago he married Miss I. Pryde, and he is survived by his widow and four sons, Messrs Arnold (Auckland), Ivan (Melbourne), Raymond (Mataura) and Stanley Baldwin (Gore) and five daughters, Misses Rose, Isabella, Myrtle, Miro and Catherine Baldwin (Gore). He is also survived by his mother, one brother, Mr D. Baldwin (Auckland), and four sisters, Mrs Dean (Perth), Mrs Allen (Gore), and Misses K. and E. Baldwin (Gore).
