THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR MEMORIAL

To The Editor Sir, —I regret to notice that a suggestion has been made at the City Council meeting that the South African war memorial at the junction of Dee and Tay streets should be utilized as a clock tower. It is to me unthinkable that such an action be taken. The memorial was placed there as a monument to the memory of those local New Zealand soldiers who fell in the South African War, their names being inscribed thereon. It would be a poor tribute to their memory if the memorial is now degraded to utilitarian purposes. The same sentiment would permit of the monument to the soldiers of the Great War being used for similar purposes or the monuments in our cemeteries being likewise used. I trust that the good sense of our council will prevent the proposed plan being given effect to-Yours, etc., r r tqdd _ Invercargill, October 20, 1937.
